The temple has been built in the memory of an important event in the life of Lord Buddha: 'dhammachakrapravartan' - setting the wheel of eternal law into motion. After ataining the enlightemment at Bodh Gaya, Lord Buddha gave his first discourse to five of his firsr disciples at Sarnath. These disciples were earlier the friends of Buddha and were practicing meditation with him. Lord Buddha had left them behind seeing the fuitility of self-mortfication. This first discourse is called dhammachakrapravartan.

To the video, I have added a song by Nusrat 'kinve mukhade to nazaran hatavan, ke tere bicho rab dikhada', which means 'I cannot divert my eyes from your face as I see God in you'. I feel that thousands of persons would have said this to Buddha and hence I have selected this song.

Dhamekh Stupa at Sarnath

Dhamekh Stupa

The Dhamekh Stupa is the most remarkable and massive structure at Sarnath. The present name Dhamekh proves that it certainly has some connection with Buddha's Dharma. According to the Archaeologists, the Dhameka might have been the Stupa built by Ashoka to mark the spot where Lord Buddha set in motion the wheel of law, called Dharmachakrapravartana.

This photograph gives a description of Dhamekh Stupa written in both English and Hindi.

Below are some more photographs of Dhamekh Stupa which I took during my Sarnath visit. This is one of the most famous and most visited tourist spot in India. Emperor Ashoka erected this pillar like several others in other parts of his kingdom. The date of erection and commissioner of this pillar is also confirmed by the edicts of Ashoka that is engraved on it. The pillar also records the visit of Ashoka to Sarnath. The year of his visit is said to be around mid 3rd century BC. It is interesting to note that at one time, the Ashoka Pillar of Sarnath stood over 17 meters in height. Its capital with the four lions back to back that has been adopted as the official emblem of modern India can be seen in the museum at Sarnath.

The pillar of Ashoka at Sarnath is famous for its edict. It reads, "No one shall cause division in the order of monks". The Ashoka Pillar at Sarnath is actually a column surmounted by a capital. Among others, it consists of a canopy representing an inverted bell-shaped lotus flower. A short cylindrical abacus assists it where four 24-spoked Dharma wheels with four animals (an elephant, a bull, a horse, a lion in this order), and four lions face the four cardinal directions. The four animals are believed to symbolize different steps of the Gautam Buddha's life.

Mother Ganga

Last year in December, I went to Varanasi and spent 4-5 days there. I visited Dashashvamedh Ghat which is near the famous Vishvnath temple. If spirituality is calmness and peace of mind, I found more of it at Dashashvamedh Ghat than at Vishwnath temple. See this photograph where two sadhus are in communion with one another. It is the sunset time and there are not many people around. The time is running at a very slow pace like river Ganga and the depth of each moment is enormous. I wished I could spend more time here.

Then, look at this photograph. This photograph contains three different worlds happily coexisting in the vicinity of each other. An old person/sadhu (alone) resting on the bank, a faimily boating (mother, father and their son) in the river and two girls (perhaps sisters or friends) rejoicing in their togetherness. All the world views are embraced into one by Mother Ganga, I bow myself to Her. Slowly, slowly, Ganga has not remained an ordinary river for me. A relationship, very personal one, has developed between us. These photographs try to capture that relationship. The photographs may not be special, that which has been photographed is very special to me.

When I was returning back, I was very fortunate to see a sadhu playing flute. I was in hurry to return and couldn't do more than taking a very brief video of him. There, we visited the Golden temple and Jalianwala bag. Here, my friends are standing in front of a wall where you can see the marks of bullets on the wall. In the background is the monument constructed as a tribute to the martyrs of Jalianwala Bag. I have posted a video of my visit to Jalianwala Bag on You tube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVRo3-sH5kA.

You can watch these walls in the video as well.

We also visited the museum there which had many photographs and documents of historic importance. The most moving document was a description from a lady who was there on the night of 13 April, 1919 when the great massacre took place there. I talked about this in my yesterday's posting.

I have found a nice blog on sulekha.com on the description of the Bag and the museum by V. Srikrishnan at http://sreekrishnan-v.sulekha.com/blog/post/2002/07/from-sikhism-to-buddhism/comments.htm.

Below, I am giving a short extract from this blog .

At a short walk from the Golden Temple lies the famous Jallianwala Bagh. It was here that a cruel British officer ordered his troops to ruthlessly butcher scores of unarmed Indians gathered for a peaceful demonstration against the Rowlatt Act. Two thousand Indians were either murdered or wounded within a few minutes.

The entrance to Jallianwala Bagh is a narrow passage. High walls surround the Bagh on all sides. There is a well in a corner, into which many jumped and drowned on that fateful day. People who tried to scale the high walls were mercilessly ploughed down. Some of the bullet marks on the walls have been preserved. The honourable British courts that tried Gen Dyer, the man responsible for the mass murder, acquitted him, nay complimented him. It was left to Udham Singh, one of the volunteers serving water at Jallianwala Bagh on the day of the massacre, to travel to England and shoot Gen O'Dwyer. Gen O'Dwyer was the commanding officer of Gen Dyer, who himself died from a fall. The British promptly hung Udham Singh within three months of his act of revenge. Before being put to death, Udham Singh declared, What greater honour could be bestowed on me, than death for the sake of my motherland?

There is a martyr's gallery inside the compound, which gives a graphic description of the events and the acts of bravery connected with the massacre at Jallianwala Bagh. First is a picture of Udham Singh. There is a description of the events leading to the demonstration -- Dr. Satyapal and Dr. Saifuddin Kutclu were arrested on 9 April 1919 under the draconian Rowlatt Act, which provided for indefinite imprisonment of political suspects without trial. The demonstration on 13 April 1919, at Jallianwala Bagh, was to protest these arrests. Dr. Satyapal and Dr. Kutchlu were later sentenced to transportation for life.

There is also the picture of Madan Lal Dingra. On 1 July 1909, Madan Lal Dingra shot dead William Curzon Wylie. Wylie patronised a group of Indian students studying in Britain, who worked against India's freedom. When sentenced to death, he said, Thank you, my Lord, I feel proud that my humble self has been of some use to my country. What else can a poor and ignorant son like me offer to my motherland except blood? Therefore I have made this sacrifice at her altar. Earlier during prosecution, he declared, At this hour India needs to learn one lesson. That is to lay down one's life and the only way to teach this lesson is to sacrifice one's life.

There is also the moving description by Ratan Devi, whose husband Chaggu Bhagat was shot dead on that day in the Bagh. She describes in vivid detail how no one helped her throughout that fateful night to carry the body of her husband out of Jallianwala Bagh since people were terrified to break the imposed curfew. She also describes how people were left to die inside the Bagh and how the wounded did not receive as much as a sip of water during the entire night.

The final portrait is that of Ravindranath Tagore, who returned his knighthood to the king of Britain as a protest against the massacre. He wrote, ... the very least that I can do for my country is to take all consequences upon myself in giving voice to the protest of the millions of my countrymen, surprised into a dumb anguish of terror. The time has come when badges of honour make our shame glaring in this incongruous context of humiliation, and I for my part wish to stand shorn of all special distinction by the side of those of my countrymen who for their so called insignificance are liable to suffer a degradation not fit for human beings. And these are the reasons which have painfully compelled me to ask your excellency, with due deference and regret, to relieve me of my knighthood Jallianwala Bagh will not fail to move any Indian to tears.

Ratan Devi and Jalianwala Bag

There is a museum in Jalianwala Bag.

During my trip to Amritsar, I went to Jalianwala bag and visited the museum.

In the museum, I found a moving description by Ratan Devi, whose husband Chaggu Bhagat was shot dead on that day in the Bag. Dobhal, a glaciologist who has spent the last three years climbing and poking the Chorabari glacier, stands at the edge of the snout and points ahead. Three years ago, the snout was roughly 90 feet farther away. On a map drawn in 1962, it was plotted 860 feet from here. Mr. Dobhal marked the spot with a Stonehenge-like pile of rocks.

Mr. Dobhal’s steep and solitary quest — to measure the changes in the glacier’s size and volume — points to a looming worldwide concern, with particularly serious repercussions for India and its neighbors. The thousands of glaciers studded across 1,500 miles of the Himalayas make up the savings account of South Asia’s water supply, feeding more than a dozen major rivers and sustaining a billion people downstream. Their apparent retreat threatens to bear heavily on everything from the region’s drinking water supply to agricultural production to disease and floods.

Indian glaciers are among the least studied in the world, lacking the decades of data that scientists need to deduce trends. Nevertheless, the nascent research offers a snapshot of the consequences of global warming for this country and raises vital questions about how India will respond to them.

According to Mr. Dobhal’s measurements, the Chorabari’s snout has retreated 29.5 feet every year for the last three years, and while that is too short a time to draw scientific conclusions about the glacier’s health, it conforms to a disquieting pattern of glacial retreat across the Himalayas.

A recent study by the Indian Space Research Organization, using satellite imaging to gauge the changes to 466 glaciers, has found more than a 20 percent reduction in size from 1962 to 2001, with bigger glaciers breaking into smaller pieces, each one retreating faster than its parent. A separate study found the Parbati glacier, one of the largest in the area, to be retreating by 170 feet a year during the 1990s. Another glacier that Mr. Dobhal has tracked, known as Dokriani, lost 20 percent of its size in three decades. Between 1991 and 1995, its snout inched back 55 feet each year.

Here is another article from Peak Adventure on the chorabari glacier:

Chorabari Bamak Glacier

              Region: Garhwal, Uttaranchal
Lake Formed By Glacier: Gandhi Sarovar
Altitude Variation: 600m To 3,800m
Best Time to Visit: Throughout Summer and Autumn Season.

Approach to the Glacier
The glacier is approachable by road up to Gaurikund via Rudraprayag, Guptkashi and Sonprayag. From Gaurikund, a foot trek runs over the hill slopes up to Kedarnath temple. From Kedarnath temple, there is a 3-km footpath to the glacier snout. Between the rock face and right lateral moraine of the glacier, there is a lake formed by glacier-melted water called “Gandhi - Sarovar”.

Chorabari Bamak glacier is situated in Rudraprayag district of Uttaranchal the glacier is 6-km. Long and originates from the southern slope of Kedar-dome, Bhartekhunta and Kirti Stambh and this hill range is the water divide which separates the gangotri group of glaciers and the Chorabari glacier. Several hanging glaciers and avalanche chutes feed the glacier. The lower part of the glacier is covered by thick debris and bounded by huge deposits of lateral moraines. The glacier starts from its accumulation zone (600m) and terminates at an elevation of 3,800 m, from where a snow/ ice melt stream originates, called “Mandakini” and merges into the Alaknanda River at Rudraprayag.

Trek: - Base Camp – Gaurikund
Gaurikund to Chorabari Glacier17-km
Gaurikund to Rambara7-km
Rambara to Kedarnath7-km
Kedarnath to Chorabari Glacier 3-km

Retreat of the Chorabari Glacier

The strange geological event I talked about in a previous post was not so strange. After posting the photographs, I searched on the net about this event. I could not only locate the place we visited in the satellite photographs I found on the net, but I could also understand what we had seen there. The place which was so strange to us is not so to the geologists. Our observation that we were standing on a huge mass of ice insulated under stones was correct. But, we could not imagine that we were standing on a glacier called 'chorabari' which means hidden water and that glacier is shrinking in area at a fairly constant rate.

This discovery encouraged me to post my videos on net which I had shooted on the chorabari glacier without knowing it. So, last night I edited my videos and added a commentary to them. I am posting that video here.

I am giving the cometary below as well for ready reference.

"This is a track which starts from Kedarnath and takes you to Gandhi Sarovar.

"We left Gandhi Sarovar behind and marched forward totally unaware of the what we were going to see, just exploring the natural beauty.

"After a modest tracking one or more kilometers, we saw a strange geological phenomena. We saw a platue of stones and mud underneath snow caped mountains. We couldn't understand what it was. We thought that it is the result of some natural calamity or destruction caused by by some strange geological event. The platue was spread over an area of few square kilometers. Soon, we discovered that beneath the stones and mud, there were huge masses of ice- a discovery which made us very excited.

"We came back and forgot all about it. Few days back, I was searching on the net and found that we were on the Chorabari glacier. It is nearly 13000 feet above see level in the shadow of a sharp Himalayan peek. You can hear a tumbling stone breaking the silence of mountains or water gurgling under the ground, a sign that the glacier is melting from inside. Where it empties out- scientists call it snout- a noisy stream called Mandakini originates from that place and rushes down to meat the river Ganges.

"So, the strange phenomena we witnessed at Kedarnath was the retreat of the chorabari glacier."

Gandhi Sarovar

Gandhi Sarovar is a small glacial lake near Kedarnath in the state of Uttaranchal, India at approx 3900 m. It is at a distance of 3.5 km from Kedarnath.

It is believed that Yudhishthir, the eldest of the Pandavas have departed to heaven from Gandhi Sarovar. River Mandakini, a major tributary of The Ganges originates from here. Previously this was know as " CHORABARITAL" ( CHORA = hideden, BARI= water, TAL= lake) because due to continuous self reconstruction of the glacier, its water was often not visible. After the death of Mahatma Gandhi, his ashes were immersed in the lake. Since then it is renamed as Gandhi Sarovar.

When we reached there, it was raining and the lake was hidden in mist. It uncovered itself slowly and slowly as you can see in these pictures.

If you don't stop at the lake but continue you journey in forward direction towards the snow covered mountains, you will reach a platue where the strange geological phenemena (about which I talked in the last post) is occuring. type='html'>I shall share my photographs with the world at this blog.

Photographs can say many things which are not conveyed in words- the images in your mind as well as the images from a camera...

Read the following beautiful passage from Osho:

It was surrounded by small hills and there was a small pond. Nobody could describe that pond except Basho. Even he does not describe the pond, he simply says,

The ancient pond
Frog jumps in
Plop!

Is this a description? The pond is only mentioned, the frog too. No description of the pond or the
frog... and plop!

The village had an ancient pond, very ancient, and very ancient trees surrounding it; they were
perhaps hundreds of years old. And beautiful rocks all around... and certainly the frogs jumped; day in and day out you could hear ”plop,” again and again. The sound of frogs jumping really helped the prevailing silence. That sound made the silence richer, more meaningful.

This is the beauty of Basho; he could describe something without actually describing it. He could
say something without even mentioning a word. ”Plop!” Now, is this a word? No word could do
justice to the sound of a frog jumping into the ancient pond, but Basho did it justice.

I am not a Basho, and that village needed a Basho. Perhaps he would have made beautiful sketches, paintings, and haikus.... I have not done anything about that village – you will wonder why. I have not even visited it again. Once is enough. I never go to a place twice. For me number two does not exist. I have left many villages, many towns, never to return again. Once gone, gone forever, that’s my way; so I have not returned to that village. The villagers have sent messages to me to come at least once more. I told them, through a messenger, ”I have been there once already, twice is not my way.”

But the silence of that ancient pond stays with me – again I am reminded of the Himalayas... the
snow – so beautiful, so pure, so innocent. You can only see it through the eyes of a Bodhidharma,
a Jesus, or Basho. There is no other way to describe the snow; only the eyes of Buddhas reflect it.
Idiots can trample it, can make snowballs out of it, but only the eyes of the Buddhas can reflect it,
although...

The wild geese
Do not intend to cast their reflections.
The water has no mind
To reflect their images...
and still the image happens.

The Buddhas do not want to reflect the beauty of the world, nor does the world in any way intend to be reflected by the Buddhas, but it is reflected. Nobody wills, but it happens, and when it happens it is beautiful. When it is done, it is ordinary; when it is done, you are a technician. When it happens you are a Master.

Communication is a part of the world of the technician – communion is the fragrance of the world of the Master. This is communion. I am not speaking about anything in particular....
The wild geese and the water....

OSHO
From: Glimpses of a Golden Childhood
(Talks given from 1984)
